Welcome to Reception!

Hello everyone! Mrs Phillips, Mrs Drinkall, Miss Doyle and the staff team welcome all the Snowy Owls and Tawny Owls to Southcott and to the Reception class page. We are very proud of all of our pupils. We enjoy working in partnership with parents and carers and offer our thanks for all efforts in supporting children with their learning at home.

Phonics

In Reception at Southcott children have daily phonics sessions. From September 2022, we will be introducing a new scheme: Bug Club Phonics. Bug Club Phonics meets 100% of the DfE criteria for teaching systematic synthetic phonics and provides everything needed to help children succeed in early reading.

During 2022-23 we hope to invite parents into school to observe phonics being taught. Below you can see two sample lesson videos. These are there to support parents with their own understanding of how we teach phonics and how they can support their children at home to practise using phonics skills during their time in Reception. Please note that these sessions are not derived from the Bug Club Phonics scheme, but they do give you a taste of typical practices in terms of the teaching and learning of phonics. Please enjoy watching them if you wish to and talk to your child's class teacher if you have any questions during term time. We look forward to inviting parents in to school to see live phonics teaching in action at some point during the year.
